Celebrating World Water Day

To mark World Water Day, March 22, we would like to introduce ‘Robin’ who ensures that clean water is available to communities in the Vohitsaoka municipality in the Ambalavoa district of Madagascar. Here he tells us about his work.

Rasolofotiana Fanilo, a Municipality WASH Agent.

I am Rasolofotiana Fanilo Robin, serving as the Municipality WASH Agent in Vohitsaoka. My primary responsibility is overseeing all water infrastructure within Vohitsaoka municipality, located in the Ambalavao district.

There are nine neighborhoods under my jurisdiction, with five equipped with boreholes installed by Feedback Madagascar. Specifically, Soamiaradia neighborhood has six boreholes, Ambohimana neighborhood has 24, Soaseranana has six, Soavahiny has one, and Firaisantsoa Vidia has one as well.

Every two weeks, our team conducts monitoring visits to one neighborhood. During these visits, we assess the functionality of the boreholes. If any issues arise, the local repairers trained by Feedback Madagascar are tasked with fixing minor repairs. However, for significant problems, it falls upon me as the Municipality WASH Agent to intervene. In such cases, we collaborate with Ny Tanintsika-Feedback Madagascar to coordinate technician support.

Our interactions with local repairers are integral to our operations. During monitoring visits, we engage with residents to raise awareness about their role in contributing to the municipality's upkeep, which involves a yearly fee of 5000 Ariary per household.

We have observed a notable decrease in the incidence of diarrheal diseases within our municipality since the implementation of these boreholes, underscoring the importance of clean water access.

I extend my gratitude for your support and express hope for the expansion of borehole coverage to more villages in the future!
